Default Margarito-Mosley moves to Staples Center

According to the LA Times.

Whatever the reason for it, it's probably better that this fight is happening in Los Angeles.

The Jan. 24 world welterweight title fight between champion Antonio Margarito and Pomona's "Sugar" Shane Mosley has been moved from Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas to Staples Center, fight officials said Thursday.

The shift comes just days after Mosley's statements to the grand jury that investigated the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative were released. In them, the four-time world champion acknowledged that he knew that he was taking the oxygen-boosting drug EPO and was told to deceptively refer to the designer steroid THG as "flaxseed oil."

Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Keith Kizer said Thursday that the commission was likely to confront Mosley about the revelations because he had previously told Nevada officials that he didn't believe he had taken anything that was on the banned list of the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Kizer was surprised to learn that promoters had moved the fight, but he added that he didn't believe the Mosley camp was trying to avoid possible discipline in Nevada.

"We knew Staples was available, and we made a deal figuring we might as well take the fight to where these fighters' fans are," Margarito's promoter, Bob Arum, said.

I definitely wasn't trying to go to vegas to see margarito whup mosley, but @olympic&fig i'll probably go. supposedly the mma card in anahiem will hurt ticket sales but we shall see. I expect a good crowd for this fight unless tickets are outrageously priced.

That was my thinking - for a $4.5 million price tag, and whatever site fee comes with it, I can easily envision a Taylor-Wright scenario. Unless of course AEGolden is willing to step up in a big way.

But that aside, I'm glad to see that promoters are willing to give real cities one more crack at embracing the sport. Even if there's additional motivation behind the move

Antonio 'The Tijuana Tornado' Margarito poses with three-division world champion 'Sugar' Shane Mosley at today's press in Los Angeles to announce their upcoming WBA welterweight championship clash on January 24 at Staples Center. "I'm happy to fight in Los Angeles," said Margarito. "I am really excited and looking forward this fight. I am not taking any tune-up fights. I want to fight the best and I have been wanting to fight Mosley for over two years and now this my opportunity to shine." Mosley meanwhile had some breaking news. "My Father will not be training me for this fight, Bernard Hopkins' trainer Nazim Richardson will be in my corner, we have been training in Big Bear for the past two weeks."
