Rich has written more than 1,500 published articles, mostly for newspapers. He has been a reporter for The Patriot Ledger in South Shore Massacusetts, The Laconia Citizen in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, and The Alewife in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Other than writing, his main hobby is boxing. He won a bronze medal in the national intercollegiate boxing tournament while attending Virginia Military Institute as part of an exchange program in 1998.

Rich also attended the Air Force Academy and Norwich University: both military schools. He coached the boxing club at Norwich for three years and graduated from Norwich University in 1999 with an English Degree.
